Data Scientist / AI Engineer
Location: UK London / Bristol
Clearance: BPSS eligible (required prior to engagement start)

Overview
A leading UK financial institution is seeking two experienced Data Scientists (or AI Engineers) to design, build and deliver advanced AI and analytics solutions. These roles sit at the intersection of data science, engineering and strategic problem‑solving, supporting high‑impact initiatives across the organisation. Successful candidates will be hands‑on technical leaders with strong communication skills and the ability to guide both clients and junior team members.

Key Responsibilities
* Lead end‑to‑end AI, advanced analytics and automation projects from discovery through to production deployment.
* Translate complex data into clear insights and strategic recommendations for senior stakeholders.
* Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams including engineers, consultants and business leaders.
* Design, develop and implement machine learning models, statistical methods and AI solutions tailored to business needs.
* Support business development activities such as solution design, proposal input and client presentations.
* Mentor junior data scientists and analysts, contributing to capability development.
* Maintain awareness of emerging AI/ML technologies, tools and methodologies.
Required Skills and Experience
* AI Project Lifecycle: Proven experience delivering full‑lifecycle AI projects, from research and prototyping to production deployment. Strong communication and stakeholder management.
* Advanced Analytics: Expertise in analytics for structured data, with strong Python skills and experience using frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras or Hugging Face.
* NLP & ML: Deep understanding of NLP and ML techniques for unstructured content, including experience with foundation models and large language models.
* AI Solution Development: Experience architecting and delivering AI solutions using modern tooling, including generative AI assistants such as GitHub Copilot or Amazon CodeWhisperer.
* Cloud & Data Platforms: Familiarity with cloud environments (AWS, Azure, GCP) and experience with relational and NoSQL databases (SQL, Postgres, DB2, MongoDB).

Preferred Experience
* Expertise in one or more specialised areas such as NLP, image processing, video processing, voice processing or Watson technologies.
* Familiarity with modern UI frameworks (e.g., Backbone.js, AngularJS, React.js, Ember.js, Bootstrap, JQuery) to support integration of AI solutions.
* Experience working across multiple operating systems (Linux, Windows, iOS, Android).
* PhD or equivalent experience in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics or a related field

An experienced Data Analyst is required to support a data transformation programme within a national digital screening service. The role focuses on modernising an end‑to‑end screening pathway by analysing multiple existing datasets, identifying data issues, and helping define future target data structures.

Core focus of the role

* Define and validate the meaning and structure of future datasets
* Quantify and assess data quality issues
* Translate data anomalies into clear business rules with stakeholders

Essential skills

* Assess data completeness, validity, consistency, uniqueness, and interpret operational or clinical implications
* Contribute to defining entities, relationships, and minimum viable datasets
* Map legacy fields to target definitions, resolve ambiguous usage, and propose standardised terminology
* Analyse duplicates, conflicts, and missing data, documenting trade‑offs and resolution options
* Work with subject matter experts to agree handling of anomalies and confirm business meaning
* Produce clear outputs such as issue summaries, dashboards, reconciliation lists, and sign‑off materials (experience with Power BI required)
* Create clear analytical documentation covering methods, assumptions, rules, and limitations
* Strong SQL for analysis, validation, and checking engineering outputs
* Proven experience with geospatial data, spatial formats, coordinate systems, and spatial analysis
* Ability to interpret geographical context and derive regional or national‑level insights

Contract Role: Data Warehouse Engineer / Data Architect (Greenfield Build)

A growing technology team is beginning a full greenfield data transformation initiative, aimed at unifying all revenue‑related and member‑related data into a single, reliable, analytics‑ready platform. This is a newly opened project that will underpin future AI capabilities within the organisation.

They currently have a small engineering function. You will be the specialist responsible for architecting and delivering the first foundational phase of their data platform.

The Opportunity

You will be responsible for designing and delivering a brand‑new Data Warehouse or Data Lake solution, consolidating multiple operational systems into one unified data layer. The initial phase will focus on:

* Bringing together four key data sources (Salesforce/Marketing Cloud, Oracle Symphony, SevenRooms PMS, and internal systems) into a centralised architecture.
* Designing and implementing a data ingestion and unification approach, with the option to begin via POC for 1-2 sources before scaling.
* Building the orchestration layer for data movement and transformations.
* Establishing the presentation layer for analytics and reporting.

Following this, the second phase of the project aims to introduce an AI capability layer, including:

* Applying AI models onto the unified data set.
* Natural Language Processing use cases.
* Laying the foundations for operational AI in the business.

This role offers the opportunity to define best practice from day one and shape the technical direction for data and AI within the organisation.

Key Skills & Experience

* Strong background in building Data Warehouses or Data Lakes from scratch (greenfield).
* Deep experience in the Microsoft technology stack (Azure Data Factory, Azure SQL, Synapse, Databricks, etc.).
* Proven ability to design data models, pipelines, orchestration layers and reporting foundations.
* Experience ingesting and modelling data from Salesforce/Marketing Cloud, Oracle Symphony, or SevenRooms is highly desirable.
* Understanding of how AI and NLP can be applied to structured datasets (nice to have).
