Building skills for tomorrow

Microsoft MVP Stefano Demiliani shares his advice on the Microsoft skills that will be most sought-after, and how to develop them.

We’re in an era where demand for digital skills is growing, but unfortunately supply is lower than it needs to be and despite recent discussion in the IT sector, AI will not solve that problem.

Yes, it accelerates automation, boosts productivity, and eliminates human error. But today’s AI is also unpredictable. It needs training to be efficient, and that need is increasing demand for IT specialists, not reducing it. AI in business is not like ChatGPT; it has to work with business data and make decisions accordingly. This can’t be done with AI models alone—it needs people. The cloud is a fundamental building block in this change, and for that reason, experts on cloud technologies and AI will enjoy a great future.

The good news is that there are many ways to upskill in these technologies and break into the IT sector. Microsoft provides a lot of content about its own products and services in various formats including video, books, documentation, free training, and virtual events.

Focus on a topic that’s both in-demand and of interest to you: after all, passion is everything, so embrace something that you love. Here are my personal suggestions for improving your Microsoft skills:
