Data Engineer - Contract (Day Rate Flexible)
We're bringing in a Data Engineer on a contract basis to support a growing demand for dataâdriven capabilities across the business. This position sits within an evolving engineering team focused on building reliable, scalable data solutions using a blend of onâpremise Microsoft technologies and modern tooling.
In this role, you'll be working alongside architects and senior technical colleagues to design and deliver robust data services that meet both operational and strategic goals. Engaging with business teams will also be a key part of the job, ensuring the work you deliver ties directly to the needs and direction of the organisation.
You'll collaborate with a range of teams - including Data Science, Digital, and Core Systems - on both crossâfunctional initiatives and dataâspecific projects. A strong focus on engineering quality is essential, as is adherence to internal standards, governance practices, and regulatory expectations. Participation in Agile processes, code reviews, and structured testing forms a regular part of the workflow.
Key Responsibilities
* Building and deploying enterpriseâgrade data solutions using onâprem Microsoft technologies, including SQL Server, SSIS, SSRS, and SSAS.
* Working with technical leads to implement solutions aligned to architectural guidance and specifications.
* Engaging with business stakeholders to ensure delivered work meets intended requirements.
* Supporting multiâteam delivery efforts across Data Science, Digital, and Core Systems.
* Contributing to Agile events such as standâups, refinement sessions, retrospectives, and demonstrations.
* Providing meaningful input during peer reviews of code and design.
* Following internal engineering standards, architectural principles, and governance practices.
* Creating documentation, knowledge notes, and release details throughout the development lifecycle.
* Conducting thorough testing and quality checks ahead of deployment.
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
Essential
* 3-7 years' experience working within Data Engineering and/or Business Intelligence.
* Strong onâpremises experience with SSIS, SSRS, SSAS, and SQL Server (mustâhave).
* Experience delivering solutions in regulated or controlled environments.
* Ability to quickly understand new subject areas and technical concepts.
* Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problemâsolving abilities.
* Confident communicator able to explain technical detail to mixed audiences.
* Handsâon experience building ETL/ELT data pipelines and integration processes.
* Solid understanding of dimensional modelling, data warehouse concepts, and data design practices.
* Proficiency with TâSQL and related dataâmanipulation languages.
* Experience working within Agile frameworks (ideally Kanban).
* Strong collaboration and relationshipâbuilding skills across technical and nonâtechnical teams.
* Positive teamâoriented mindset.
Desirable
* Industry knowledge related to financial services or mortgage lending.
* Experience building reports or dashboards with Power BI.
* Scripting/programming exposure (Python, C#, PowerShell).
* Ability to work with semiâstructured data (JSON, XML) and consume APIs.
* Familiarity with Azure data services such as Data Factory, Data Lake, Azure SQL, Cosmos DB, Synapse, Functions, etc.
* Experience with Git repositories, branching approaches, and version control.
* Exposure to technologies like Bicep, YAML, Power Platform, and PowerShell.
