In terms of what you might need, 86% of Dynamics 365 Functional Consultants hold at least a Bachelor’s degree. However, only 31% consider that a degree is important for working with Microsoft Cloud, while 42% believe a degree to be an important factor when it comes to increasing earning potential.

Two-thirds (66%, down from 83% from in our previous survey) of Dynamics 365 Functional Consultants are certified, and 47% of those have undergone certification renewal to maintain their Microsoft Certified status. Meanwhile, 67% (down from 78%) believe that certifications make a candidate a more valuable professional.

If you’re planning a career as a Functional Consultant, then you have two options to start off your certification journey. Currently, there are two certifications which verify foundational knowledge of Dynamics 365—Microsoft Certified: Dynamics 365 Fundamentals (ERP) and Microsoft Certified: Dynamics 365 Fundamentals (CRM), each focusing on specific products within those function groups.

If you’re already at a mid/associate level, there are currently eight certifications to choose from that are all aligned with the Functional Consultant job role. Each certification focuses on a specific product from the Dynamics 365 or Power Platform stack, helping you grow your career through gaining specialisms, or fill in your knowledge gaps.

For advanced Functional Consultants looking to further their career, or move into even more technical roles, there’s the Microsoft Certified: Dynamics 365: Finance and Operations Apps Solution Architect Expert certification, the Microsoft Certified: Power Platform Solution Architect Expert certification, and the Microsoft Certified: Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management Functional Consultant Expert certification. These three accreditations are the three most advanced of their type on Microsoft’s Dynamics 365 learning path.

There’s no set pathway that will lead you to a role as a Dynamics 365 Functional Consultant, although having experience in IT infrastructure will certainly help. The wide range of product types in the Dynamics 365 suite attracts a diverse set of professionals from all kinds of backgrounds. They may have used a Dynamics 365 CRM product in another role, worked as a consultant in other application ecosystems, or simply have a knack for finding the best solution to business problems.
